A Climb Back to Life

A journey through loss, resilience, and the heights of the human spirit.

About the Book

Since my injury and amputation in 2021, my life has gone through profound changes. Many times I have been invited to give a talk on my experiences, on the subject of recovery from extreme shock and injury. During this time I have been chronicling my reflections in written form, and in 2022 I began to draft a book describing many of my expeditions, my injury, and recovery.

I have worked closely with experienced editors to produce a manuscript. The book is titled A Climb Back to Life. I hope that it will appeal beyond the mountaineering community and provide insights and inspiration for all those seeking to overcome injury, disability or other challenges.

The experiences behind the book span my early mountaineering expeditions, the ascent of Everest and Lhotse in 2019, and the consequences of the Broad Peak expedition in 2021. My return to the mountains included K2 in 2022. These events connect the physical demands of climbing with the much more personal experience of injury, recovery and adapting to life after amputation.

The book grows out of the same subjects I discuss in my talks: living with disability, responding to setbacks and finding a way to continue. Mountaineering provides the setting, but the questions extend beyond it. How does a major injury change everyday life and future ambitions? What does returning to an activity you love mean after such a change? My aim is to share my own experience without suggesting that everyone’s recovery follows the same path.
