Matterhorn

The Icon of the Alps • 4,478 meters • Switzerland

The Matterhorn has a famous profile, adorning many images as a symbol of Switzerland. It is not the highest peak in Europe, or in the western Alps, and it can be scaled in several hours, rather than the days needed for a Himalayan peak. But it is considered by mountaineers as a true test of mountaineering ability, given its steep sides and narrow ridges. The summit itself is almost razor-thin, with sheer drops on both sides. It is a test of balance and nerve, as well as fitness and technical capability.

Scaling this peak gives you credibility. As I did so, I did not feel fear. Owing to the high degree of independence when climbing the Alpine way, without fixed ropes, porters or sherpas, and the skill required, reaching this peak – helped by an experienced local guide – was a significant milestone in my development.
